Middle School Physical Education Syllabus

The course is designed to provide a healthy and caring environment where students can develop competency in many movement forms. Activity units offered are structured for fitness, skill acquisition, enjoyment and expanding knowledge about rules and strategies of different sports and movement forms. They are also geared towards improving problem-solving skills through adventure sports. Interpersonal skills such as demonstrating respect, offering positive feedback, demonstrating responsible behavior in terms of physical & emotional safety, as well as maintaining good personal hygiene are essential for success in this course. The importance of valuing physical activity for its contribution to a healthy lifestyle is emphasized. iPads  will be utilized to enhance  data collection, analysis, reflection, and communication of learning.

At the completion of the course students will:

  • Standard 1             (Athletic Skills)

The Physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.

  • Standard 2              (Cognitive Understanding)

The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, priciples, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.

  • Standard 3              (Fitness)

The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowleadge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.

  • Standard 4              (Responsibility & Respect))

The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respect self and others.

  • Methodology:

Activity units last 2-5 weeks

  • Units are structured using developmental skill progressions
  • The students participate in lead-up activities/small group activities, and the actual performance
  • Fitness is integrated into every unit on a daily basis
  • Individual fitness data collection will occur at regular intervals for the purpose of plotting individual fitness progress over the course of the year

Standards Based Grading:

Provides more accurate information about a student’s

level of understanding with respect to specific content

standards.

SBGR Goal:

To move student learning to the quest for understanding

and knowledge.

SBGR Assessment:

Students will be assessed based on understanding and

demonstration of Physical Education standards and their

habits as a learner.  Both formative and summative

assessments will be used.  On-going reflection will provide

for the development of a growth mindset.

Daily Assessment:

Prepared. Active. Safe. Socially Responsible.      P.A.S.S.!!!!!

Student progress will be available on PowerSchool.
